Haircuts and Relationships

Haircuts and Relationships
I get my haircut at Artika on Greenleaf Ave in Uptown Whittier. I get a great haircut, sensory experience and often speak with owners Jesse and Patty.

You may not know Jesse, but if you ever have visited Sojourn you’ve heard some of his music mixes. I enjoy the atmosphere he has created. You should visit the shop. Patty and I share talk about running a business and mystical themes. Then there’s the young woman who actually cuts my hair, Evelyn.

In the past three years that she’s been cutting my hair her beloved grandfather passed away, her father had surgery; she became an Aveda Coach (trainer), traveled to Spain and married (I ooficiated the ceremony). We talk about music, films, family and whatever is going on in our lives. We’ve prayed together. In short, I go to Artika not just for the haircuts; I go because of the relationships with these people.

That got me thinking.

How many times do we leave or stay at a place because of relationships? Banks, grocery stores, coffee shops, car washes, burger joints, clubs and even churches. But relationships are messy. I mean you have to deal with…you know…human beings and people are messy. So why do we crave to make a connection to another soul?

Maybe one of the most significant ways we were created in the likeness of our creator is this: we are wired for relationships. Even the creator lives in context of relationship (traditionally known as the trinity).

So maybe a haircut is not just a haircut after all.

You can date the evolving life of a mind, like the age of a tree, by the rings of friendship formed by the expanding central trunk. – “How I Grew”, Mary McCarthy
